Geokaun Mountain & Cliffs

The highest mountain on Kerry's Valentia Island, be sure to give yourself a day to enjoy a walk or drive up Geokaun Mountain. Standing at over 270 metres, it is the highest point in the Ring of Kerry, with two kilometres of pleasant walking trails and roadway. Several car parks, viewing areas and picnic tables along the way make this a day-trip accessible to all.

Start Your Journey

Before reaching the summit, take a detour along the short path to the Fogher Cliffs, which connect the mountain to the Atlantic. Enjoy dramatic sea views from the cliff-hugging viewing platform.

Continue up and follow more than 30 information plaques, which detail the natural history and mythology of the area. Several viewing platforms offer commanding views of the Skellig Islands and Blasket Islands.

At the Signature Point Blaskets View, look out towards these melancholic islands, once home to world famous Irish storyteller Peig Sayers before they were abandoned in 1953.

Continue to the mountain’s summit, where there is a cable station and three viewing areas. Bask in panoramic views of the mighty MacGillicuddy Reeks, spectacular Dingle Peninsula and vast Atlantic Ocean.

After taking in the sky-high views over Valentia Harbour, return to sea level and reward yourself at one of the local cafes, pubs and gift shops in the pretty village of Knightstown.
