Rossaveal or “the peninsula of the whale” is a gorgeous fishing village in the heart of the Connemara Gaeltacht, and the main ferry port for the Aran Islands.

Lovely Rossaveal is a bustling harbourside village set in the heart of the Irish speaking Gaeltacht district. It is the chief fishing port of Co. Galway where the catch that supplies Galway’s renowned seafood restaurants land daily, and also the main ferry port for the Aran Islands.

Rossaveal is the perfect launch pad for deep sea fishing, with companies providing chartered angling tours. You can also book scenic boat tours of Galway Bay and use this as your base to do some serious Island hopping! The Aran Islands offer visitors a glimpse into a way of life that has long since disappeared, with raw beauty and charm that leaves a lasting impression on visitors.

The Islands defy their size by all they have to offer: breath-taking scenery, ecclesiastical ruins from early Christian times, medieval castles and cliffs. There are also prehistoric stone forts, including the famous Dn Aonghasa (Dun Aengus) ring fort, and golden sandy beaches.

The town is also the departure point for The Connemara Foodie Experience which includes a visit to the Connemara Abalone farm on the shores of Galway Bay. There is also a tour that begins at Rossaveal harbour heading to the largest of the Aran Islands.

Nearby Trá an Dóilín is in an area of outstanding natural beauty known for its clear waters and popular beach for swimming and snorkelling.
