The Wild Atlantic Way is all about fun and discovery. And what could be more fun than a holiday experience with an equestrian twist?

Live out your wildest western fantasies along Ireland’s dramatic coast, whether in the saddle yourself, on an historic guided tour or cheering on the jockeys at a thrilling beach race.

Here are our picks for the top four equestrian holiday experiences you don’t want to miss.

Beach riding is widely available

Nothing beats the thrill of galloping along the sand at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. You’ll feel like the star of your very own adventure movie with the sea spray on your skin and the open sky above. It’s a holiday experience like no other.

Take your pick of the many west coast beaches that offer this unique riding experience, from horse riding in Inishowen, County Donegal, to pony trekking on the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry. Beach riding is widely available throughout the region, including on beaches in Galway, Mayo and Sligo.

Saddle up and explore some of Ireland’s wildest coastal landscapes on horseback. On an exciting post-to-post trail ride, you’ll move from one stunning location to another each day, and enjoy comfortable accommodation at night along the way.

There are many routes to choose from, catering to all levels of horse riding experience, including rides along the Connemara coast and through the mountains and one-of-a-kind trails across the famed Burren landscape of County Clare.

  • Enjoy the excitement of racing with the Atlantic as the backdrop

Think you know horse racing? This favourite pastime of the Irish is taken to a magical new level when the action takes place on long stretches of gorgeous sandy beach. The west coast is blessed with some of the world’s prettiest beaches, and there’s nowhere better to enjoy the excitement of horse racing than with the Atlantic as the backdrop.

Beach racing takes place at numerous Discovery Points along the Wild Atlantic Way in summer, where provisional racetracks are set up at low tide and spectators of all ages create a festive atmosphere. Head to the Geesala Festival in Ballina, County Mayo for picture-perfect horse racing with live music, a fun fair, dog and sheep shows, and a deep sea angling competition.

The Glenbeigh Festival in Kerry is where you’ll find horse and pony racing on the golden sands of Rossbeigh Beach, along with open-air concerts, trad sessions and children’s fancy dress competitions.

  • There are plenty of activities for all equestrian tastes

For something a little different on your west coast holiday, stop by one of the many long-running horse shows that take place annually throughout the region. You don’t have to be a champion jockey to appreciate the strength and beauty of Ireland’s magnificent horses, and shows like the Ballinalee Connemara Pony Show celebrate these native animals with show jumping, dressage, eventing competitions and hunter trials. The shows'  face-painting and live music also draws crowds of curious locals and visitors alike.
