Located in the heart of Galway Bay, the Aran Islands, with their jagged cliffs and ancient forts, are places that simply have to be experienced on any Wild Atlantic Way trip.

The largest of the three islands, Inis Mór, provided the perfect venue for Red Bull's Cliff Diving Series at a cliff known locally as Serpent’s Lair. A natural pool carved over millenia by the force of the ocean, it rests up to 27m below the clifftop above. Courageous divers came here for the event to hurl themselves into the chilly Atlantic below from a height more than three times that which Olympic divers jump from.

The event took place in 2014, hosting more than 3,000 spectators who came out to enjoy the spectacular cliff jumping show in the glorious sunshine.

But the rugged coastline of Inis Mór isn’t just for thrill-seekers. While The Serpent’s Lair plays host to the somersaults and diving tricks, it’s also steeped in Celtic mythology.

The islands are a rocky magnificence with wildflowers, jagged cliffs and ancient forts. Stone walls run across the mossy green landscape. Here, the Irish language is spoken, and the islanders know exactly how to give a warm welcome.

The Aran Islands are something of an outdoor museum, with Celtic churches, the spectacular cliffs of Dun Aonghasa, and the Cliffs of Aran to be explored. It’s also home to the infamous Aran sweater.

The Red Bull Cliff Diving Series moves all around the globe, with the competitors launching themselves from clifftops  and other cliff jumping locations in a different country each week.

The divers may have come and gone but the rugged beauty of the Aran Islands remains.
