Rhonwen’s family-run Beara Bistro is in the heart of picturesque port town of Castletownbere on the relatively unspoiled Beara Peninsula. It offers fine food, much of it sourced locally, comfortable, informal dining, and a clean modern, friendly ambience.

Food is prepared in the Bistro kitchen where breads are baked daily – organic brown and white loaves, thick crusty garlic bread from house baguettes, light and fluffy baps, and flat rosemary and tomato bread (a delicious starter, with three different hummus dips).

Fish landed by the local Castletownbere Fisherman’s Coop provide chowder and fish & chips (hand cut!) and succulent prawns. Rhonwen’s buffalo burgers are made from buffalo grazed in west Cork and topped with award-winning local Milleens cheese – and lamb dishes demonstrate the flavor of locally grazed.

The menu offers options for vegetarians, vegans, and gluten-free diets. Rhonwen’s leek custarde, a creamy leek, herb, and tomato sauce layered with hazelnuts in a home-baked breadcrumb crumble, is a seasonal specialty.

And, as befits a family-run restaurant, children are especially welcome. They can choose simple pasta dishes, pan-fried free-range chicken gougons, local sausages and mash, or the ‘gruffalo burger’ with hand-cut chips.

Coffee is freshly ground on demand and the sweet trolley caters for tastes ranging from traditional to decadent. (Try Rhonwen’s ‘cheese’ cake, a vegan option that tastes better than the ‘real’ thing.)

Prices are modest. Selected French wines and craft beers from the Cork’s Galtee mountains complement sparkling apple juice from the family-run Tipperary Apple Farm.

And even if the rain beats down outside, in the dining room with its striking display of now famous local artists, only good food and good company matter. In Rhonwen’s Bistros, you will be very welcome and you will eat very well!
