Templecronan Looped Walk

The Templecronan loop is an easy 5km walk, that offers the walker a chance to visit a 12th century church,an ancient Holy well, walk on an old famine road, as well as enjoy a real taste of the open Burren limestone landscape. It is mostly on flat ground, around the village of Carron, in the heart of the Burren, with just a gentle climb at the end of the loop to get back to Cassidys pub, where you will deserve a refreshing beverage.

Follow the green arrows (the purple arrows are for the longer 9km Carran loop). Enjoy the many creative Burren limestone stiles to allow you to pass through the Burren limestone walls, but which also cleverly prevent livestock from passing through. Depending on the time of year, the area could be alive with many rare native Burren plants and wildflowers.

Directions to Trailhead:

From Ennis, follow the N85 towards Lahinch and turn off onto the R476 for Corofin. Continue on the R476 for 7km before turning onto the R480 near Lemenagh Castle. After 1km turn right for Carron - the trailhead is ocated opposite Cassidy’s Public House in the village. From Ballyvaghan, follow the N67 towards Lisdoonvarna, and turn off onto the R480 signposted Corrofin. Continue for approx..9km through the open Burren countryside, and then turn left for Carron. After approx 4km you will decend into Carran village, overlooking Europes largest Turlough (seasonal lake) – the trailhead is located opposite Cassidy’s Public House in the village.

A-B. Leaving the trailhead at Cassidy’s Pub, follow the green (and purple) arrows downhill past the church and Primary School. The purple arrows are for the longer Carran Loop. After 600m, turn right onto a laneway towards Templecronan Church. At the end of the laneway, the loop enters a field via a stile and the two loops diverge here. The Carran Loop (purple arrows) turns left - but you turn right.

B-C. Follow a well worn track to a stile. Cross it and turn right and follow the green arrows to Temlecronan Church. The loop exits the back of the church grounds and joins a sandy track and continue to follow the green arrows as the loop passes a Holy Well and joins a walled roadway where you turn left.

C-A. At the end of the roadway a stile takes you into a ‘slab’ field and you rejoin the Carran Loop. Turning right follow the green and purple arrows to exit onto a surfaced road near the Carran Research Station. Turn right here and follow the road for a short distance to reach an old laneway on your left. Turn left onto the laneway and follow the green and purple arrows back to the trailhead.
