Unique, refreshing and inspirational to watch, Yeats’ dramatic play On Baile's Strand was performed live in a huge, wild and natural arena on a typical Irish summer's day...

Near his spiritual home, Sligo, on a spectacular stretch of Cummeen Strand, the Blue Raincoat Theatre Company, Ireland’s only full time venue based professional theatre ensemble - took to the sand.

Here on the wind swept beach with the sand between your toes, there is no need to imagine. Just open your eyes. You are present at an infamous poet’s writing desk, and within seconds you are transported to the early 19th century via your own natural home-grown theatre.

Yeats on baile strand play

Sligo is synonymous with Yeats, so where else more apt to stage his first stage play than underneath bare Benbulben’s head and with the spectacular Knocknarea mountain in the distance. The play deals with the madness of Cuchulainn and here - amongst the wildest elements of Irish nature, the themes of vengeance, love, loyalty, betrayal, remorse and madness seem even more intense and furious.

Almost 150 years after the birth of Yeats, watch his brilliant play brought to life, on the edge of Europe, along the Wild Atlantic way.
