Start 2020 as you mean to go on in the stunning surrounds of the Wild Atlantic Way. Pack your bags and make your escape from the bright city lights this New Year's Eve – frosty boreens and cosy rural pubs are waiting under winter skies.

Portmagee, Co. KerryFor an unforgettable New Year's Eve, travel to the remote South Western village of Portmagee in Kerry, on the beautiful Iveragh Peninsula, for Old Year's Night. Join the locals to celebrate a custom that's over 100 years old with a colourful street parade, led by a piper with blazing turf torches and performers dressed symbolically as the Old Year and the New Year. Live music and dancing make this completely unique mini festival a once-in-a-lifetime experience for all visitors.

Enjoy a family evening in County Cork at the Bantry New Year Family Gathering. Celebrate the dawn of 2020 with those you love while enjoying a firework display over stunning Bantry Bay. Start your evening with a delicious meal in the town before moving to Wolfe Tone Square to join the nighttime celebrations.

Cottage on the Wild Atlantic WayMake it a musical New Year with talented singer Gavin James and guests Ryan Sheridan and Dec Pierce's Block Rockin' Beats in the Gleneagles INEC Arena on the 31st December. Join the talented troubadour James as he sings his way into 2020.

These events provide the perfect focal point for a winter break on the Wild Atlantic Way, but equally, you might be drawn to the quiet stillness of a small village, or a remote cottage perched near breathtaking cliffs. For New Year's Day, you could take in some scenery by taking one of our recommended road trips.

However you choose to celebrate the New Year on Ireland's famous coastal route, the incredible landscape is guaranteed to leave you invigorated and energised – ready to begin life afresh in 2020.
