The busy market town of Kilrush is oozing with history, and is a gateway to the magnificent Shannon River estuary.

The special heritage town of Kilrush dates back to the 16th century and is steeped in a rich maritime and market tradition. It underwent a major development and redesigned by the Vandeleurs, a prominent landlord family two hundred years later. The Kilrush Heritage Centre tells the story of the town and includes an audio visual reconstruction of the 1888 Vandeleur evictions. The exhibition is a great starting point for a heritage walk through the streets of Kilrush, which will complete your transportation back to landlord times. The impressive walled garden on the grounds of the old Vandeleur estate is open to visitors with mazes, unusual water features and Victorian style working glasshouses to explore.

Discover a treasure of heritage at the interpretive centre at Scattery Island, home of an ancient monastic settlement that predates the Viking raids on Ireland and accessible by boat from Kilrush.

A visit to the West Clare Railway offers young and young-at-heart a fun and nostalgic outing.
