Donegal Town

Donegal Town is a bustling centre rich in history and the ideal place to stop off while travelling north or south of the county.

Donegal Town

Situated at the point where the River Eske flows into Donegal bay, lively Donegal town is a bustling centre and popular destination for tourists. This is the ideal place to stop off for a stay while travelling north or south of the county, with a castle, a rich history of tweed manufacturing and a spectacular coastline.

The ‘Diamond’ in the centre is very much the heart of Donegal with accommodation, restaurants and the perfect place to buy Donegal tweed which the area is renowned for. Check out Donegal Castle, built by the O’Donnell chieftains in the 15th Century and rebuilt in Jacobean style in the 16th Century by Sir Basil Brooke. South of the Diamond are the ruins of Donegal Abbey, which overlooks beautiful Donegal Bay.

Catch the Donegal Bay Waterbus for a one hour cruise which includes commentary on the historical, natural and geographical sights of the area. The Railway Heritage Centre tells the story of the once busy rail network, with a selection of artefacts and digitized railway photographs from the bygone age on view.

If you are a walker there are lots of way-marked trails. Try the 2 kilometre Bank Walk running along Donegal Bay, or similar stroll through Ardnamona Woodland Walk at Lough Eske. For something more challenging try the spectacular 65km marked Bluestack Trail through mountains and moorlands.

Donegal Town has several festivals and country music events throughout the year. Highlights include the ‘Donegal Town Summer Festival’ in July with an eclectic mix of music and family fun entertainment. ‘A Taste of Donegal Food Festival’ in August celebrates the culinary delights of the region.
