The delightful market town of Carndonagh is ideally situated in the centre of Donegal’s famous Inishowen Peninsula. Steeped in history it boasts wonderful views of Trawbeaga bay and the surrounding countryside.

Carndonagh is the perfect base to explore Malin Head, Ireland’s most northerly point. There are a number of easily accessible beaches nearby include Lagg and the Five Fingers Strand in Malin, Pollan Bay and Tullagh.

Skirting the town is the impressive 8th century High Cross on the grounds of a church founded by St Patrick for the Bishop of Clogher’s brother. It is considered one of the most important early-Christian remains in all of Britain and Ireland. The history doesn’t stop there, as a church bell is believed to have arrived following the Spanish Armada shipwreck at Kinnagoe Bay in 1588.

As with so much of Donegal, the town isn’t far from some of Ireland’s best golf courses, with the 36-hole championship Ballyliffin Golf Club only a short drive away. A recommended hill walk is on Slieve Sneacht and when that’s done, mix with the locals in one of the towns well known pubs.
