Adare

Adare is one of Ireland’s prettiest villages beautifully set in woods along the River Maigue running through Ireland’s Golden Vale. Thatched cottages line its wide main street.

Adare

Beautiful Adare is a model estate village planned by the Earl of Desmond in the 18th Century. Centred on the majestic Adare Manor Hotel and it’s championship golf course and ornamental gardens, the broad village street plays host to a number of quality restaurants, buzzing pubs and attractive thatched buildings many which are home to arts and crafts shops.

With top class accommodation options, the town is a hive of activity with angling on the River Maigue and Clonshire Equestrian and Polo Centre on the edge of the village has the second biggest indoor arena in the country as well as 120 acres of rolling parkland.

The Adare Heritage and Visitor centre traces the development of the village back to the 12th Century and is the ideal prompt to visit famous heritage sites in the village. Desmond Castle dates back to the early part of the 13th century and became a strategic fortress during the following turbulent years. It was the property of the Earls of Kildare for nearly 300 years until the rebellion in 1536, when it was forfeited and granted to the Earls of Desmond who gave the castle its present name.

The Franciscan Friary, founded in 1464 by Thomas the 7th Earl of Kildare is an example of the monasteries erected in Ireland during the 14th and 15th centuries. The Trinitarian Priory next to the Adare Heritage Centre is the only recorded Trinitarian monastery in Ireland. It was originally built by the Fitzgerald Clan for the Trinitarian order of monks in the early 13th century. Also worth a visit is St. Nicholas Old Graveyard on the outskirts of the village.
