Leenane Sheep and Wool Centre

The world of wool and the interesting process from sheep-shearing to world-famous Irish knitwear creations are displayed at the Leenane Sheep and Wool Centre, in Leenane, County Galway.

The gift shop carries a range of colourful and thoughtful souvenirs, ranging from crystal, woolens and jewellery, through to little presents. Beautiful knits, woven sweaters, scarves and throws are available while for keen knitters, a fantastic range of 100% Irish wool knitting yarn is available.

Practical items include rain-wear, while a variety of books by Irish novelists and authors on local history, flora and fauna, plus ordnance survey maps for walkers are also in stock.

An Tobar Café serves home-made meals and snacks, from Irish Stew to fish chowder or the famous carrot cake. Various breeds of sheep can be seen at Leenane and they can be seen being sheared in peak season. Visitors can learn not only about sheep farming in Connemara but also follow the wool from sheep to yarn through daily carding, spinning and weaving demonstrations.

An introduction to the local area is available in English, Irish, French, German or Italian while there is a pictorial display of the history of sheep and wool handcrafts. Quirky slide shows allow children to discover what their role would have been in the 1900's through hands-on experience while visitors various woolly or sheepish questions are answered.

Guided/self-guided tours are on offer and disabled access to the premises is available.
