Breeogue Pottery

A native of Sligo, Grainne Mac Loughlin has been making pots professionally since 1998, having previously gained experience by working for several of Ireland's well established Potters.

Nestled in County Sligo’s beautiful landscape, between Knocknarea mountain and the shores of Ballisodare Bay, the studio and gallery takes its name from the townland of Breeogue, which is four miles from Sligo town. The megalithic site of Carrowmore, one of the oldest in Europe is close by.

In a converted 18th century stone building, Grainne produces a high-fired stoneware table-top range and also contemporary lighting, she applies various layers of different coloured glazes over her simple and uncomplicated vessels. In the final firing (1280*C), the glazes react with each other, resulting in exciting swirling patterns, reminiscent of images found in nature.

Breeogue Pottery also welcomes corporate and private commissions and specialises in baby feet impressions in clay, an ideal gift for the new arrival. Gift vouchers are available.

Also on display in the gallery is a collection of exquisite ceramic pieces by Grainne's husband, Tom Callery. He uses an ancient Japanese glazing technique called "Raku" which provides an array of rich, iridescent colours and hues, drawing inspiration from the surrounding countryside, Tom creates incised vessels with sculpted birds, hares and cows.

Learning

Visitors to the studio are welcome to partake in a brief guided tour, observe the various processes and relax in the lovely setting outside the pottery. Grainne has facilitated groups (Adults and Children) by giving courses in the creative techniques of Porcelain and Stoneware production.
