Looped Walks in Sligo

 Surf Coast – Looped Walks

The Surf Coast is home to looming cliffs, crashing waves, ancient ruins and a unique table mountain beloved by writer WB Yeats. Wherever you are in this region, expect truly wild landscapes and often the weather to match, as you engage in a bracing looped walk.

Follow the story of Irish folklore as you stroll the Children of Lir Loop in County Mayo. Named after the legendary children who were transformed into swans and condemned to wander the countryside for 900 years, this route offers plenty of space for contemplation. On the route you’ll meet the impressive monument dedicated to the famous tale depicting Fionnuala, Aodh, Fiachra and Conn in their swan forms at Ballycastle.

Meanwhile on the Lough Easkey Loop in County Sligo, you can trace the scenic shores of the lake, which seems like a beautiful drop in the ocean surrounded by forest plantations. Along the route, you’ll encounter blanket bog, which brings together a vibrant mix of Ireland’s flora and fauna, with rare types of moss, threatened bird species and the country’s only native reptile, the common lizard.

These are just some of the great looped walks  in Sligo waiting to be explored on the Wild Atlantic Way’s Surf Coast. Whatever region you choose to explore, there’s a memorable looped walk for every walker to avail of. What’s more, our handy trip planner will help you put together the itinerary that’s right for you.
