What to Pack

Planning a trip to Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way? You won’t be disappointed! There’s golden beaches, turquoise seas, wild countryside, magnificent mountains and all the craic that goes with the towns, villages and cities on the west coast. We’ve put together a handy ‘what to pack’ series, so no matter what kind of traveller you are, you’ll know what to bring.

What to bring for holiday in Ireland

BACKPACKER.

Backpacking your way around the Wild Atlantic Way? First up, we recommend a big rucksack with waterproof cover and rain jacket – no matter what the season! As the weather can be wonderful, as well as wild, be sure to pack lots of layers, especially cosy knits for when the sun goes down. The official Wild Atlantic Way app is jam-packed with places to see, accommodation options and delicious restaurants for every budget. Download it ahead of your trip to help build your itinerary. On your trip, you’ll want a good night’s sleep in hostels, so include an eyemask and earplugs – laundry soap and flip flops will also come in handy. And of course, a camera to capture every thrilling moment of your adventure!

What to pack for weekend away in Ireland

Weekend Away.

Seeking a fun weekend away? You’re guaranteed to return home invigorated from the Wild Atlantic Way. Again, the app will ensure you don’t miss any events, hidden gems or discovery points nearby, and you’ll want a camera to capture the stunning scenery along some of the route’s amazing walks. Comfy trainers and a waterproof jacket are always a good shout, but don’t forget your swimming costume too, as the coast boasts some absolutely breathtaking beaches. Food is another highlight (especially fresh seafood!), and in the many charming towns and villages along the coast you’ll find an abundance of culinary options. Be sure to also catch a lively traditional Irish music session during your visit – you’ll find plenty of them taking place in local pubs.

What to pack for outdoor holiday in Ireland

Outdoorsy.

Outdoorsy types keen to immerse themselves in all the Wild Atlantic Way has to offer should take note of this selection of items. Sturdy hiking boots are essential, as is a backpack, compass and waterproof cover for your phone. Bird-watchers should include binoculars as there’s a plethora of wildlife living on this wild and rugged coast. Finally, healthy snacks and band-aids are always a smart pack!
